What to ask before you book
- Q1How much is the visit with tax, and do you drop it if I go ahead?
- Q2Do you work on my brand of dishwasher?
- Q3If it is leaking, will you check the door seal, the hoses and the connections under the sink on the same visit?
- Q4Do I get the parts-and-labour price before any work?
- Q5How long is your warranty, and does it cover the part, the labour or both?
Before the visit
- A photo of the model plate on the edge of the tub or the inside of the door
- The error code or the blinking light pattern, if any
- Standing water bailed out and towels down
- Under-sink cabinet cleared, so the valve and the drain line are in reach
- A note of anything new in the kitchen: disposer, faucet, plumbing work
Describe where the water is
A dishwasher fault shows up in one of three places. Tell the technician which:
- In the tub after the cycle. A drain problem: filter, hose, pump, or a new disposer.
- On the dishes as grit or film. Say whether it is every load or only the top rack.
- On the floor. Say where the puddle starts: under the door or under the sink.
Add the brand, the error code or blinking lights, and your area or postal code.
What the technician looks at first
A dishwasher that leaves water in the tub usually has a blocked filter, a crushed drain hose or, after a new garbage disposer, the knockout plug still in the disposer inlet (KitchenAid). The technician checks those three, then the drain pump. Write “water left in the tub” and whether a disposer was installed recently.
Finding the model plate
Open the door and look along the edge of the tub. Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid put it on the left side of the tub frame; Frigidaire on the inside of the door or the right side of the tub. A clear photo of it saves a question on the call.
Repair or replace
Get the quote, then look up what a similar new dishwasher costs today. Past half that price, Consumer Reports leans toward replacing. US data put the typical life of a dishwasher at about 9 years (NAHB, 2007), so age matters in the sum.
Visit fee
Ottawa repair firms list the visit and diagnosis at about $80–90 plus tax. Most drop it when you go ahead with the repair. The repair price comes after the diagnosis, before any work. Our cost guide explains when the visit fee stays.
Picking a time
Water on the floor? Shut the valve under the sink first, then pick Today or This week in the order form. If a part needs ordering after the diagnosis, ask whether the second visit is charged.

Questions
01My dishwasher won't drain. What is usually behind it?
A blocked filter in the floor of the tub, a kinked or crushed drain hose under the sink, or, after a new garbage disposer, its knockout plug still in place (KitchenAid). If the pump hums and the water stays, the pump gets tested. Write which of these fits your kitchen.
02Dishes come out gritty. Is that a repair?
It can be. Write what you see on the dishes, whether it is every load or only the top rack, and the brand. The technician finds the cause on the visit.
03Water on the floor by the door. Do I stop using it?
Pause it until it is checked. Turn off the water to the dishwasher at the valve under the sink if you can reach it, and say in the request where the water shows up.
04How much is the visit?
$80–90 plus tax for the visit and diagnosis, going by what Ottawa repair firms list. Most drop it if you go ahead. The company that calls you confirms its own fee.
05Is a nine-year-old dishwasher worth fixing?
US data put the typical life of a dishwasher at about 9 years (NAHB, 2007). Past half the price of a similar new unit, Consumer Reports leans toward replacing.
