What to ask before you book

  1. Q1How much is the visit with tax, and do you drop it if I go ahead?
  2. Q2Do you work on my brand, and can the model number tell you which part to bring?
  3. Q3Do I get the parts-and-labour price before any work?
  4. Q4Is the part usually on your truck, or does it need ordering and a second visit?
  5. Q5How long is your warranty, and does it cover the part, the labour or both?

Before the visit

  • A photo of the model and serial plate
  • The error code on the display, if there is one
  • The purchase receipt or the rough age of the appliance
  • Clear space in front of the unit, and behind it for a fridge or dryer
  • Water shut-off valves within reach for a washer or dishwasher

Write the request the way a technician reads it

Four details decide how the call goes. Put them in the “what happened” line:

  • Appliance and brand. “LG front-load washer”, “Whirlpool side-by-side fridge”.
  • The symptom, with the moment it happens. “Stops mid-cycle with water in the drum”, “fridge side warm, freezer fine”.
  • Error code, if the display shows one.
  • Gas or electric, for a range, oven or dryer. Write “not sure” if you can’t tell.

Add your area or postal code and pick a time window. The company that takes the job reads exactly what you wrote, so one clear line does more than a long story.

What you pay for

A repair in Ottawa usually comes in two parts. First the visit and diagnosis, listed by local firms at about $80–90 plus tax. Then the repair itself, priced once the technician has found the fault. Most firms drop the visit fee when you say yes to the repair. Decline, or hear that the unit is not worth fixing, and the fee usually stays. The full breakdown sits in our appliance repair cost guide.

Gas appliances

Ontario law (O. Reg. 212/01, s. 6) allows only a certificate holder to repair or service a gas appliance. For a gas range or gas dryer, get the company’s TSSA registration number and check it in TSSA’s contractor lookup before the visit.

What happens on the visit

The technician runs the diagnosis in your home, then gives you a quote that lists the parts and the labour. Parts go in only after you say yes. One Ottawa firm describes its service call in exactly these terms: in-home diagnosis, then an upfront repair quote. If the part is on hand, the repair can happen on the same visit. If it needs ordering, ask when the second visit would be and whether it costs extra.

Picking a time

The order form gives three options: Today, This week, Flexible. Pick Today when food is spoiling or water is on the floor, and say so in the first line. The company tells you on the call which slot it can offer.

Who calls you

613 Pros is a request service. Your request goes to one independent repair company in Ottawa, and that company quotes, books and does the repair.

Questions

01How much does an appliance repair visit cost in Ottawa?

Ottawa repair firms list a visit or diagnostic fee of about $80–90 plus tax, and most waive it when you go ahead with the repair. Each company sets its own fee; confirm it when it calls.

02Will I know the repair price before the technician comes?

The repair price is quoted after diagnosis, once the technician knows the part and the labour. The model number and a clear description help the technician come with the right part.

03Who comes to fix it?

An independent repair company from Ottawa. 613 Pros passes your request on. The company quotes the job, does the work and is responsible for it.

04Can I send a request for a gas stove or gas dryer?

Yes. In Ontario, work on a gas appliance needs a gas technician holding a TSSA certificate (O. Reg. 212/01, s. 6). Get the company’s TSSA registration number and look it up on tssa.org before the visit.

05What if the appliance is not worth fixing?

The technician tells you after the diagnosis. In that case the visit fee is usually kept. Ask how the company handles it before you book.
