What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Gas range or cooktop: what TSSA registration number can I check?
  2. Q2How much is the visit with tax, and do you drop it if I go ahead?
  3. Q3Do you service my brand, wall ovens included?
  4. Q4Do I get the parts-and-labour price before any work?
  5. Q5How long is your warranty, and does it cover the part, the labour or both?

Before the visit

  • A photo of the model plate: on the oven frame with the door open, or on the frame of the storage drawer; under a cooktop on its underside
  • Gas or electric, written in the request
  • Oven empty and cool, racks out
  • The drawer under the oven emptied
  • The breaker or gas shut-off located before the visit

Gas or electric decides who comes

Start the request with the fuel. An electric range is standard appliance repair. A gas range, gas cooktop or gas wall oven needs a gas technician with a TSSA certificate: Ontario law (O. Reg. 212/01, s. 6) reserves repair, service and removal of gas appliances for certificate holders. Can’t tell which you have? A gas range has burners with flames and a gas pipe at the back. Write “not sure” and the company will ask.

Write the fault in one line

  • “Gas range, GE, oven won’t heat, top burners fine.”
  • “Electric glass-top, Frigidaire, front left burner stays cold.”
  • “Wall oven, Bosch, control panel blank, breaker on.”

Add your area or postal code and a time window.

If you smell gas

Leave first. Leave the door open if it is safe and touch no switches. Call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from outside. A repair request comes after.

Finding the model plate

On a range, open the oven door or pull out the storage drawer and look along the frame. On a cooktop, the plate sits on the underside. Whirlpool lists these spots; Frigidaire also uses the trim inside the oven. A photo of the plate tells the technician which parts fit.

Repair or replace

Take the quote and compare it with a comparable new range at today’s price. Past half of that, Consumer Reports leans toward a new one. US data put typical life at about 13 years for an electric range and 15 for gas (NAHB, 2007).

Questions that sort the call

On any gas job, get the TSSA registration number and look it up on tssa.org. Ask for the visit fee with tax, and for the full repair price before work starts. Ottawa repair firms list the visit at about $80–90 plus tax and most waive it if the repair goes ahead. Ask whether the company services your brand, and wall ovens as well as freestanding ranges, and what warranty covers the part and the labour.

Who calls you

613 Pros hands your request to one independent repair company in Ottawa. That company quotes, repairs and is responsible for the job.

Questions

01I smell gas near the stove. What do I do?

Get everyone out now, and leave the door open behind you if it is safe. Touch no light switches or appliances on the way. From outside, call Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427 or 911. The repair request waits until the gas is made safe.

02Can any repair technician fix a gas oven?

In Ontario, gas appliance work is limited by law to holders of a TSSA gas certificate (O. Reg. 212/01, s. 6). Get the TSSA registration number from the company and check it on tssa.org.

03Gas oven cold, top burners fine. What fails?

The bake igniter and the gas valve are among the parts a technician tests. Both count as gas work, so the job needs a technician who holds a TSSA certificate.

04My electric burner or oven element stays cold. Can I send a request?

Yes. Write which burner or element, whether the display or clock still works, and the brand. The technician tests the element and its controls on the visit.

05How much will the repair cost?

The visit and diagnosis run about $80–90 plus tax at Ottawa repair firms, and most waive it if you go ahead. The repair price is quoted after diagnosis, once the technician knows the part.
