What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Do you price by truck volume, and how much of the truck do you think my load fills?
  2. Q2Is the dump fee in your price, or added after?
  3. Q3What costs extra at my place: stairs, a basement, mattresses, appliances?
  4. Q4Do you take renovation debris, and is it priced apart from household junk?
  5. Q5Where do usable furniture, scrap metal and electronics end up?

Before the visit

  • Photos of the whole pile, with a door or a person for scale.
  • Which floor it is on, how many stairs, and how narrow the halls are.
  • Where a truck can park and how far it is to the pile.
  • A count of mattresses, appliances and paint cans, since they are priced or handled apart.
  • Anything that stays, marked or moved aside before the crew arrives.

Describe the pile

Junk removal is priced by volume and effort, so the request needs both:

  • What it is. Furniture, mattresses, appliances, boxes, renovation debris, yard waste.
  • How much. A rough count, or “about a pickup-truck bed”, or “half a single garage”.
  • Where it sits. Curbside, garage, main floor, basement, attic.
  • Access. Stairs, tight turns, a long walk from the driveway, an elevator booking.
  • When. A date tied to a move-out or a closing goes in the first line.

Example: “Basement clean-out in Nepean. Two sofas, a mattress, a dryer and about 20 boxes. Narrow stairs. Must be gone by the 30th.”

Keep a few photos of the pile on your phone. The company may ask for them on the call.

How haulers count it

Ottawa haulers sell space in the truck, from a minimum charge up to a full load. One Ottawa firm publishes $275 for a residential quarter load and $425 for a quarter load of construction debris. Items that take extra work or disposal add to that: $50 for stairs or narrow halls, $100 for basements, attics or several floors, $35 per mattress, $125 per fridge or other large appliance. Treat that list as one company’s prices; the quote you get comes from the company that calls.

Sort before the truck comes

A few minutes of sorting can shrink the load. Pull out recyclable packaging such as glass, metal, plastic, paper and cardboard: mixed loads cost the hauler double at the landfill. Carpets put out at the curb are tied, at most 1.2 m long, 60 cm across and 15 kg.

Questions

01How do Ottawa junk haulers set the price?

Mostly by how much of the truck the load fills, plus add-ons for stairs, basements, mattresses and appliances. One Ottawa firm lists a residential quarter load at $275. The final price is set when the crew sees the pile.

02Can I put it at the curb instead?

For a few items, yes. The City takes 3 garbage items per collection, and a bulky item such as a sofa counts as one. Above that, extra garbage goes out only in City yellow bags, and furniture cannot be bagged.

03What does Trail Road refuse?

Trail Road does not accept asbestos, liquids or hazardous waste. Mention paint, chemicals, propane tanks or old insulation in the request so the company can say how they handle it.

04Who comes to pick it up?

An independent local junk removal company. 613 Pros passes your request to one company, and the price is between you and them.
