What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Do you charge per item, per TV, or by the hour, and what is the minimum?
  2. Q2Do you bring the wall mount, or should I buy it, and which type fits my TV?
  3. Q3How will you fix the mount to my wall: studs, masonry anchors, something else?
  4. Q4How do you hide the cables, and does any of it count as electrical work?
  5. Q5Do you take the boxes and packaging away?

Before the visit

  • The TV's screen size and weight, from the manual or the sticker on the back
  • The wall type: drywall, plaster, brick, concrete, or over a fireplace
  • The mount, if you bought one, still in its box with all the hardware
  • For furniture: the model names or product links, and every box in the room where it goes
  • A clear floor area about the size of the finished piece

Describe it like a parts list

One line per item. “65-inch TV, weight from the manual, drywall wall in the living room, mount bought, hide the HDMI cable.” “Queen bed frame, 3 boxes, bedroom on the second floor.” “Six-drawer dresser, still boxed.” With the size, the wall and the box count, the company can quote on the first call.

If the TV goes above a fireplace, on brick or on concrete, say so. Masonry needs different anchors and a hammer drill.

Mounting: what decides the time

The wall decides most of it. On drywall the mount goes into the studs, and the stud spacing sets where the TV can sit. Plaster, brick and concrete take longer. Cables add steps: a cover on the wall surface is quick, a run inside the wall means cutting and patching drywall.

Power is a separate trade. Moving or adding an outlet is electrical work, and in Ontario that goes to an electrical contractor with a notification filed with the Electrical Safety Authority. Ask the company who handles that part.

Assembly: what decides the time

Part count and size. A bookshelf is a quick task; a wardrobe with sliding doors or a loft bed can take hours. Keep every bag of hardware and the instructions with the boxes. Tell the company about stairs if the pieces have to be built in a small room upstairs.

What the quote should cover

Ask for one number that covers the whole visit. For a TV: mounting, the bracket if the company supplies it, the cable cover or the in-wall run, and patching any holes. For furniture: each piece, carrying it to the room, and taking the packaging away. Check how the company bills a job that runs long, and whether HST is included.

After the work, test it with the installer still there. Push gently on the TV at each corner, open every drawer and door, and check that the wardrobe is fixed to the wall if the instructions call for an anti-tip strap.

Questions

01How much does TV mounting cost in Ottawa?

The company quotes it on the call, based on the TV size, the wall type and the cables. Handyman time in Ottawa is about $85–120 an hour per HomeStars Ottawa; ask for the full price on the call.

02Can the cables go inside the wall?

Ask the company how it runs HDMI and other low-voltage cables. A new power outlet behind the TV is electrical work: in Ontario, hired electrical work goes to an electrical contractor and is reported to the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA).

03Can a TV go over a fireplace or on brick?

Ask the company. Masonry takes different anchors and more time, so say so in the request so the company brings the right drill and hardware.

04Do I have to buy the mount?

Ask on the call whether the company supplies the mount or installs yours, and check the mount’s weight rating against your TV.

05How long does furniture assembly take?

It depends on the piece. A bed frame or a desk is a short job; a large wardrobe or a sectional with many parts takes longer. List each piece in the request so the company can estimate the time.
