Moving in Kanata: describe the move, one crew calls back

Kanata sits about 22 km west of downtown, on Highway 417. Name your street, the type of home and the date; we hand the move to one independent company that covers the west end, and it calls you.

In short

  1. 01Kanata pays the city-wide rate: two movers and a truck typically run $110–130 an hour, with a 2–3 hour minimum.
  2. 02The drive out west shows up as a travel charge, flat or one extra hour. Ask where the crew starts its day.
  3. 03Townhomes and stacked townhomes near the Kanata Town Centre mean inside stairs, which add carry time.
  4. 04A move to or from downtown runs along the 417; the drive between homes is usually on the clock.

What to ask before you book

  1. Q1Where does your crew start the day, and how do you bill the drive to Kanata?
  2. Q2Is the clock running while the truck drives between the two homes?
  3. Q3How many movers do you send for a townhouse with stairs on three levels?
  4. Q4Is the truck included, and what size is it for my home?
  5. Q5Can I have the estimate in writing with the minimum and travel listed?

Before the visit

  • The floor plan in plain words: how many levels, stairs inside, a walk-out basement
  • A spot for the truck in the driveway or right in front, clear of snow in winter
  • Your condo or rental office's move-in rules, if you are moving into an apartment building
  • Furniture that needs taking apart, already listed in the request
  • Boxes sealed and grouped by room on the ground floor

Kanata in one paragraph

Kanata is west of the Greenbelt, which separates it from Nepean, and Highway 417 cuts it into a north half and a south half. Around the Kanata Town Centre you find townhomes and stacked townhomes; heading toward Terry Fox Drive, single-family homes take over. The main roads a crew will use are March Road, Eagleson Road, Terry Fox Drive, Hazeldean Road, Castlefrank Road and Campeau Drive.

How to describe a Kanata move

Start with the street and the type of home. “Stacked townhouse off Campeau, top unit, 2 bedrooms, moving to a bungalow in Glen Cairn” tells the crew the stairs, the crew size and the drive in one line. Add the date and any heavy piece.

If you are moving between Kanata and downtown, give both postal codes. The drive along the 417 between the two homes is usually part of the billed time, so the company needs both ends to estimate.

Moving into an apartment building

Condo and rental buildings usually ask you to book the service elevator in advance, and some ask for a deposit or the mover’s certificate of insurance. Rules differ by building, so get them from the office before the call and pass them on to the company.

Where the truck stands

Unsigned streets allow 3 hours of parking from 7 am to 7 pm. If the move may run longer, plan to load from the driveway. On the street, the truck stays 9 m back from an intersection and 3 m from a hydrant, and a truck longer than 6.5 m may not stay on the road overnight.

The City’s overnight parking ban covers November 15 to April 1, on nights when 7 cm of snow or more is forecast. Before a winter move, shovel and salt the path from the door to the truck the evening before, and move the cars off the driveway.

Who handles the move

613 Pros hands your Kanata move to one independent moving company. That company calls, gives you its price and does the move.

Questions

01Do Kanata moves cost more?

The hourly rate is the same city-wide range. What changes is travel: crews coming from across Ottawa add a travel fee or an extra hour. Ask about it on the call.

02I live in a stacked townhouse. What should I mention?

The number of inside staircases at each end and any tight turns. Stairs add carry time, and the crew size depends on them.

03Driveway or street for the truck?

The driveway, if the move may run past 3 hours: that is the limit on unsigned streets between 7 am and 7 pm. In a stacked townhouse with no driveway of your own, read the signs on the block before moving day.

04What changes for a winter move?

From November 15 to April 1, overnight parking on the road is banned when the City forecasts 7 cm of snow or more. Clear a path from the door to the truck the evening before.

05I am moving inside Kanata, across the 417. What should I mention?

Both streets, and which side of the highway each one is on. A short drive still runs on the clock, and the stairs at each end decide the crew size.
