In short

  1. 01East-end moves are billed at the Ottawa hourly rate: typically $110–130 for two movers and a truck, 2–3 hours minimum.
  2. 02Each company adds travel its own way, as a flat fee or as one more hour on the bill.
  3. 03Most Orléans homes are detached houses, with many townhouse streets; a house move means more hours, a bigger crew, or both.
  4. 04Moves to downtown use Highway 174; give both addresses so the drive is in the estimate.

What to ask before you book

  1. Q1How do you bill the drive out to Orléans and the drive between the two homes?
  2. Q2For a detached house, how many movers and how many hours do you expect?
  3. Q3Can the call and the paperwork be in French, if I ask?
  4. Q4Is the truck included, and is the travel fee in the written estimate?
  5. Q5If the move runs past the estimate, how much higher can the bill go?

Before the visit

  • Room count, plus the garage, shed and basement contents
  • Driveway cleared for the truck; in winter, a salted path to the door
  • Beds, tables and the treadmill taken apart, or listed for the crew to do
  • Your new building's elevator booking and rules, for a condo or rental
  • Boxes labelled by room for the unload

Orléans at a glance

Orléans grew as a suburb split between the former cities of Cumberland and Gloucester, joined to Ottawa in 2001. It is car-oriented: Highway 174 carries traffic to downtown, and Innes Road, Brian Coburn Boulevard, Tenth Line Road, Trim Road, St. Joseph Boulevard and Jeanne d’Arc Boulevard carry it across the east end. More than half the homes are detached houses, and about 30% are row houses and townhouses.

How to describe an Orléans move

Lead with the house type and the contents. “Detached two-storey off Tenth Line, 4 bedrooms, full basement, garage with tools, moving to a condo near Place d’Orléans” gives the company the hours and the crew size. Add the date and whether it can shift by a day.

Moving downtown or out to the west end? Give both postal codes. The drive along the 174 between homes is usually billed time.

The bilingual part

About 3 in 10 Orléans residents name French as their first language. Write the language you want in the request, and the company tells you on the call what it can offer.

Moving across the river

Orléans sits on the Ottawa River, with Gatineau across the water. Quebec moves on July 1 by tradition, a custom that goes back to fixed lease terms. Crossing the river near that date? Send the request early and ask the company how its calendar looks.

Montreal is about 198 km down the road. Movers quote that run on volume or weight and distance, so ask for a written estimate once the company has seen your things.

Loading a detached house

List the garage, the shed and the basement in the request along with the bedrooms; the company sizes the crew and the truck from that list. Clear the cars off the driveway the night before so the truck can back up to the door. If the new street is narrow or busy, or the truck has to stand on it for more than the 3 hours unsigned streets allow, tell the company on the call.

Who takes the job

Your Orléans request goes from 613 Pros to one independent moving company, which calls you, prices the move and carries it out.

Questions

01Can the company speak French on the call?

Orléans is a bilingual part of the city. Write “French, please” in the request, and ask the company on the call whether it can work in French.

02I am moving between Orléans and Gatineau. Does that work?

Put both addresses in the request and ask the company whether it runs that route. Around July 1, Quebec’s traditional moving day, book as early as you can.

03Why is a house move so much more than the minimum?

The bill is hours times crew. A detached house has more rooms, a basement and often a garage, so it takes more hours, a bigger crew, or both.

04I am leaving a house for a condo near Place d'Orléans. What helps?

Get the building’s elevator booking and move-in rules before the call and pass them on. Mark what goes to the condo and what stays behind, so the crew loads only what moves.

05What protects me if the final bill jumps?

Under Ontario law, a mover may charge no more than 10% above the estimate in your contract unless you agree to extra services. Get the estimate in writing.
